SUMMARY:
The poem 'on children' is written by Khalil Gibran. It is extracted from his famous collection of poem "The Prophet" which offers a critique of the expectations of the parents from their children.
The poem begin with a women holding her child against her bossom and asking Prophet for his advice on rising children. The prophet expresses his views about children in a poetic manner and says that their children are not their children, they are the children of life belonging itself. He says that the children come through parents but not from them, which means Parents are only the medium to bring the child into this world. They are only the Biological Parents of their children. Further, the poet says that the parents may give their love and affection to the children in the farm of basic necessary of life but they can't give them their thoughts. the poet also says that the parents may provide shelter to their bodies of their children but they cannot house their soul as their souls dwell(live) in the house of tomorrow, which means that children are the future where as parents are compared to past. The poet says that the past can become future, but future cannot become past. Similarly the parents should strive to be like children and they must not cry to make children like them as life always moves forward and not backward. The poet compares the parents to Bows and children to Living arrows, the Archer bends the bows accordingly so that the arrow may go swift and far.
The poet conclude the poem by saying that the Parents should should be glad at the way the Archer bends the Bow, Because God loves both the arrows that flies and also the bow which is stable.
